I’m sure the disciples are overwhelmed at having to hold all of this at once: the cruelty of the soldiers, the cruelty of the world, the pain of loss, the joy of being in the presence of Christ’s grace, the possibility that grace and forgiveness is the way forward but, still, the very real fear of the soldiers, the priests, the leaders: the bullies aligned with power.
There’s the rejoicing of Easter’s message, but there’s also the sadness of Good Friday’s taunts.
