A Piece of the Sermon
These prophetic women are on a mountaintop that they didn’t choose to climb, having climbed steep lighthouse steps that they didn’t seek out…but on a mountaintop, witnessing a bright light, they bring us this prophetic wisdom: this is my son. Listen to him.

It was transfiguration Sunday and I was drawn to parallels between God’s voice declaring “This is my Son, the beloved. With him I am well pleased. Listen to him.” (Mt 17:5) and the stories in this moving article by Mary Margaret Alvarado titled “That’s Somebody’s Son: Three Mothers, One Struggle: Saving their Children with Schizophrenia.” I learned of this article through substack newsletter the.Ink in their weekly recommended articles.
Alvarado’s weaving together of stories reflects the weaving together of lives in support of each other and is a heartbreaking read. Content warning: some language, some drug use, death, and descriptions of mental health episodes. The sermon shares these stories in much broader strokes with sensitivity to those topics while hopefully retaining the stories of Felicia and Quentin and their family, Tracy and Ben and their family, and Elisabeth and Luc and their family.
